Returning to work after retirement can be a daunting decision. You’ve spent your life in a career you enjoyed, so now is supposed to be the time to sit back, relax, travel, and enjoy your golden years in peace. The only problem is, for some older people, senior employment is unavoidable due to financial reasons.
There are multiple reasons for the return to work into senior employment.
- Increasing life expectancies
- End of traditional pension plans
- Boredom at home
- Health-care costs rising
- Want to try something new
- Get paid to do something you like
- Charity work
There are plenty of other reasons to rejoin the workforce, but it is a big step with a lot of things to think about before you do it. First, remember that going back to work does not mean you are going back to the job you held for 40 years of your life. You are not recreating a career. Going back to work after retirement should be enjoyable, and add to the joy in your life, not the stress. Here are some questions to ask yourself to make sure you are ready to return to work:
1. Do you need the money?
- With this economy, many older people are returning to work because they can’t afford rising medical costs and other bills. Whereas this reason isn’t a matter of want, but of need, it’s very important and can turn out to be the X factor that really pushes you to decide to return to work after retirement.
2. Would work make your retirement worthwhile?
- Do you want more time to focus on recreational activities or do you like the structure that comes along with working full-time? Deciding between these two is extremely important in determining your happiness during retirement.
3. Would working in retirement help, or hurt, your social life?
- What is going on around you? What are your friends doing? Does your significant other work? Looking at the other people in your life will help determine if work would deter or help your social life.
4. If you do decide to work, should you go full-time or part-time?
- This is a responsibility factor. How much responsibility do you want? This constitutes not only the physical responsibility of a job, but the responsibilities that will mentally consume you as well as socially.
