What To Do After an Interview

Even though you may have finished the in-person interview with a potential employer and dressed properly for the interview, there are a few things that you should do as a follow up after the interview.

End of the Interview

As you prepare to leave the interview always remember to:

  • Give a firm handshake
  • Make eye-contact
  • Tell them thank-you
  • Ask for a business card

This shows them that you will make an effort to keep in contact about the position.

Thank You Letter After the Interview

this is a time honored tradition that will never go out of style. In the world of digital, receiving a hand written thank you letter really shows enthusiasm for the job. Older generations are used to this form of communication so definitely remember to show your employers where you shine!

Following Up After the Interview

If you do not hear from the interviewer at the time they said they would contact you, or it has been over two weeks, you can do one of two things: call or email.

However you decide to make contact, always do these things:

  • Reintroduce yourself and the position you applied for
  • Ask if they have made a selection or if they are still interviewing candidates
  • Thank them again for the interview

Keep this follow-up short and to the point. You don’t want to be annoying, but you do want to show that you are interested in the position.

Keep Up the Job Search

One thing you do not want to do is to dwell over one interview. It may have been the position of your dreams, but there may be more positions with other senior employment and other companies that are better suited for you.

Keep searching for other jobs while you wait for the call-back. You never know, a better one may pop up.
