Cover letters were not as popular 5 years ago as they were today. Nowadays it is so easy for companies to receive resumes (through multiple mediums including email, forums, letters, etc.) Cover letters are pretty much always required from companies because it gives them the extra information they need to distinguish you between other applications.
Here is a sample cover letter to give you a general idea of what to write:
