How to Dress for Success at an Interview

The old cliché “Don’t judge a book by its cover” is true…except when it comes to first impressions of interviewees.

Most companies make a decision of employee worthiness within the first 10 seconds of meeting someone. So how can you dress for success and create a positive first impression?

The main word to keep in mind is “professional.” Most retirees know what the professional world wears, but sometimes you need to keep in mind the type of company you are applying to. A lot of companies have become less formal in their dress attire; keep in mind you are looking for employment that will add to the enjoyment of your retirement but not turn you back to the 9-5 50-hour week working world. However, over dressing for an interview is never a bad move.

Here are some tips for both men and women on what makes a good business attire for their second career:

Females

  • Solid color conservative skirt suit (nothing too short) or nicer casual pants
  • Blouse (play it safe with white or off-white)
  • Simple hairstyle
  • Simple jewelry (nothing dangly or flashy)
  • Tan or light pantyhose if wearing a skirt. If wearing pants, make sure your socks match your shoes and are covered by your pants.
  • Natural make-up

Males

  • Solid color conservative suit (ironed and properly fitted)
  • White long-sleeve shirt or a nice polo
  • Tie (solid or dark color) if appropriate
  • Dark socks
  • Trimmed hair

There are also a few things that both men and women should do to dress for success:

  • Wear deodorant
  • Go light on the perfume or cologne
  • Manicured nails
  • Dark Shoes (no spiked heels, open toes, sandals or sneakers)
  • Briefcase (something simple but professional looking)

If you follow the above advice and learn what to wear to the interview then your interview should be a piece of cake.
